Stories from the record
A restricted site opens to art
MMCA Seoul opened in 2013 on former military security and hospital grounds. A place with limited access became a museum open to visitors. Contemporary art here meets the history of a changing urban site.
Courtyards connect different times
The layout responds to historic buildings and traces, arranging spaces around several courtyards. These are not leftover gaps: they connect exhibitions, rest and meetings. Notice how you move between outside and inside.
Viewing starts before the galleries
Observe changes in light and sightlines as you enter from the street. Art feels different in spaces of different sizes and brightness. Exhibitions change, but the meeting of old traces and new buildings remains part of this museum's identity.
