Standing on Namsan, this observation tower offers wide views across central Seoul and the Han River.
Why choose this place
For understanding Seoul at a glance: the height of Namsan reveals how the city and Han River connect.
Make the most of your visit
Compare the tower from the walking trails with the city from its observatory. Buildings stand out by day and city lights after sunset.
Stories from the record
A tower for broadcasting
Construction began in 1969 to reduce interference between transmitters and improve broadcast coverage. The high position that now offers city views was also useful for sending signals. Tourism was not the tower's only purpose.
An observatory that had to wait
Public access was delayed by security concerns: important facilities could be seen from above. It finally opened to visitors in 1980. The familiar view conceals years when ordinary citizens could not enter.
Looking at, and from, the tower
From the observatory you see the city; from below, the tower helps you find your bearings. Compare photographs from both positions and remember its original broadcasting role.
